The Potential of Twist Ties Remains Elusive

Jo-ey Tang

As an artist and a picture editor, I am always curious as to what gets cut from an artist’s exhibition. There are many reasons why certain artworks don’t make it into a show, from considerations of aesthetic coherence to space limitation, and sometimes these missing parts reveal a lot about what the viewer does get to see. The piece sitting messily in the artist’s studio or the backroom of the gallery may have made the whole exhibition possible. To call these works failures would be incorrect… let’s call them necessities. I asked some artists to reveal these works in hiding; somehow I think they would make a pretty great imaginary group show. Consider them public secrets.
