Attempting to piece together a visual reckoning of our recession-minded “new economy,” I asked thirteen artists – Dana Hoey, Dinh Q Lê, Colby Bird, Miranda Lichtenstein, George Porcari, Tanyth Berkeley, Dan Torop, John Miller, Brad Farwell, Charlie White, Zoe Strauss, Adam Putnam, and Laurel Nakadate – to choose an image that epitomized their last year-and-a-half. The results are arranged here as a slideshow, doubling as a prelude to the article “Black Bleeds Red” in the forthcoming issue of Paper Monument.
